First Grade

First grade at BCCS is a year of tremendous growth for students. It is an especially important year for reading instruction. Our literacy program aims to take each child from where they are, and move them forward on their journey to becoming a proficient reader. Small group reading instruction develops essential reading skills, the Sitton spelling program builds spelling skills, and Reading Recovery is available for those who need extra one-on-one instruction with a trained reading professional. God’s Word comes alive to first graders through Bible stories, worship and prayer, and class devotions, as well as opportunities to serve our Savior.

God gave us an amazing world to explore! Using Battle Creek Science, students engage in active learning and exploration, including class investigations and field trips to an apple orchard, the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, and Meijer Gardens. In social studies, first graders gain a wider perspective into the world around them and God’s purpose for his people. Math Expressions activities build the foundational skills children will need to understand number patterns, addition and subtraction, and problem solving. In addition, technology enhances students’ learning with a weekly class, iPads, and Chromebooks. Learning is active and fun in first grade!
